Jay Pilini, the legendary founder of Motion and Spectre powerboats — two of the most respected names in offshore racing and high-performance boating — has passed away at the age of 64. He died on Christmas Eve, leaving a huge mark on the marine world.
Pilini wasn’t just a boat builder — he was a pioneer. Starting with Motion Powerboats in the 1980s and later creating Spectre in the 1990s, his designs pushed the limits of speed, stability, and performance on the open water.

His boats became favorites in offshore racing classes and among high-speed pleasure boaters alike. Pilini also later founded Pilini Powerboats, focusing on center-console models that combined performance with everyday usability.

Industry leaders remember him as:
- A true innovator who helped shape modern performance catamarans.
- Someone who pushed competition — especially against rivals like the Skater 28-foot catamaran — helping evolve the sport overall.
- A respected figure who wasn’t afraid to stay behind the scenes, letting his work speak.

Former industry executives said Pilini also played a key role in developing Bracket racing classes for major events like the St. Petersburg offshore races — making the sport more structured and exciting.
His earlier Motion 25- and 35-foot cats were celebrated in several racing classes, and his later Spectre 30- to 36-foot models became sought-after all-around boats, still prized by boaters today.
Pilini’s passing is a big loss for the high-performance marine community — but his legacy will continue to influence boat designers, racers, and enthusiasts for years to come.
