What exactly is Yangwang?
Most people know BYD by now — the Atto 3, Seal, and eMax 7 are already selling in India. But Yangwang is a different world entirely. It is BYD’s ultra-premium sub-brand, the same way Lexus is to Toyota or Bentley is to Volkswagen. The only difference? Yangwang made a statement with its very first car that the entire automotive world stopped to notice.
The Yangwang U8 was launched in China in September 2023, priced at 1,098,000 RMB — roughly ₹1.25 crore in China at the time. That made it the most expensive Chinese mass-produced electric car in the world, until BYD’s own supercar, the U9, eventually overtook it.
BYD stands for “Build Your Dreams.” Yangwang translates literally to “look up to the stars.” The name is aspirational — and so is the car.

The India connection — Auto Expo 2025
BYD showcased the Yangwang U8 at the Bharat Mobility Global Show 2025, and that alone was a significant signal. No serious brand burns a showcase slot just for fun. It means the market has been tested, buyer interest has been gauged, and dealer network discussions are already underway.
BYD has already built a solid foundation in India. The Atto 3 and Seal established brand credibility in the premium EV space. Now, with Yangwang, BYD is eyeing the ₹2 crore+ luxury SUV segment — territory currently ruled by the Defender, Land Cruiser, and G-Wagon.
Unofficially, multiple auto portals are projecting a mid-2026 India launch at an estimated price of ₹2.50 Cr to ₹3.00 Cr.

BYD Song Ultra EV:A 9-Minute Full Charge? Is It Real or Just a Marketing Stunt?
Crazy features — things no other SUV has
↻ Tank turn (359° rotation)
BYD’s e4 technology spins the left and right wheels in opposite directions, letting the car rotate almost completely on the spot. BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu personally drove a demo vehicle sideways onto the stage at the reveal event.
~ Emergency floating mode
In a flood or flash flood situation, the U8 can float on water. The petrol engine shuts off, suspension rises to maximum, windows close automatically, and the sunroof opens as an emergency exit. BYD built this strictly for disaster situations — not for casual use.
✦ DiSus-P Plus active suspension
The world’s first intelligent hydraulic body control system fitted to a new-energy off-road vehicle. Ground clearance can be raised by up to 15 cm on the fly, depending on terrain.
◈ Tyre blowout stabilization
If a tyre bursts at speed, the e4 system instantly redistributes torque across the remaining motors to keep the vehicle stable. BYD claims this response is 100 times faster than a conventional AWD system.
⊕ God’s Eye A — ADAS system
3 LiDARs and 2 NVIDIA DRIVE Orin X chips. Navigation assistance on both highways and urban roads, powered by an end-to-end AI architecture.
↯ Flash charging
With the 2026 update: 0 to 70% in 5 minutes. 97% in around 9 minutes. This is not just the future of EVs — it is already here.

How does it stack up against Indian competition?
In cities like my Karnal, the Thar, Scorpio-N, and Fortuner dominate every lane — and honestly, the U8 does not even compete in that segment, neither in price nor positioning. But move to Delhi-NCR, Gurugram, or Mumbai, and this car goes directly after Land Rover Defender, Land Cruiser LC300, and Mercedes GLS customers.
| Car | Approx. India price | Powertrain | Off-road rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yangwang U8 (expected) | ₹2.5–3 Cr | PHEV quad-motor | Exceptional |
| Land Rover Defender 110 | ₹1.06–1.6 Cr | Petrol / Diesel / PHEV | Exceptional |
| Toyota Land Cruiser LC300 | ₹2.1–2.5 Cr | Petrol / Diesel | Legendary |
| Mercedes GLS 600 | ₹2.55 Cr | Mild hybrid V8 | Road-focused |
India levies heavy import duties on foreign cars, and being a Chinese brand adds further tariff and geopolitical complications. That is why a car that costs the equivalent of ₹95 lakh in China ends up priced at ₹2.5–3 Cr here.
Reality check — is it actually coming?
Straight answer: no official announcement has been made yet. But BYD does not waste a showcase slot. The company is playing it smart — first build trust with mid-range products like the Atto 3 and Seal, then make the ultra-premium move when the groundwork is ready.
Multiple portals are estimating a mid-2026 India launch. But until BYD India issues an official press release, this remains an educated guess — nothing more.
Final verdict — AutoAkhbar’s take
If the Yangwang U8 comes to India, it will shake up the luxury off-road segment like nothing has before — especially for Defender and Land Cruiser buyers. In Gurugram, Delhi, and Mumbai showrooms, this will be an instant conversation starter.
Tier-3 cities like Karnal? Not just yet. The SUV market is strong here, but the ₹2.5 Cr+ customer base is still very thin. That said, spot one on the highway and everyone will stop to stare.
BYD is playing the long game — and they are playing it well. The moment any official update drops, AutoAkhbar will bring it to you first.
